Leicester consider Amartey as N'golo Kante replacement
Ghana international Amartey is making the move from defence into midfield

English Premier League champions, Leicester City have began the quest to replace their former midfield dynamo N'golo Kante after he completed a £30million transfer to Chelsea.

Leicester boss, Claudio Ranieri has touted the Ghanaian youngster, Daniel Amartey as an ideal candidate but he would have to see-off competition form new recruit Namplays Mendy for a starting berth.

Amartey started in midfield against Paris Saint Germain and offers an intriguing possibility in the position. Bought for £5m from FC Copenhagen in January, the consensus prevailed that he was a central defender who could operate at right-back.

Indeed his only Premier League start came as replacement for suspended Danny Simpson, against Norwich in February. He did well at right-back before Ranieri replaced him in the 78th minute with Leonardo Ulloa as he chased the win, which came courtesy of the Argentine striker in the final seconds of the game.

What caught the eye was an explosive turn of pace and the sense to keep his passing simple. Ring any bells?

Before Kante left for Stamford Bridge, Ranieri was asked during a media briefing at the club's camp in Austria about possibly needing to go back into the market again should the £30m transfer go through.

He said no and rattled off a list of players already at his disposal, naming Amartey high up in a hint at his thinking.

So it should have been little surprise to see the Ghana international come on for Drinkwater after an hour of the first friendly against Oxford.

But it was his presence which provided confidence, a 6ft stature and ability to cover vast ground. He was involved in plenty.

PSG went 2-0 up before the break and Ranieri decided greater experience was required in the second half, but overall it was a promising 45 minutes for the 21-year-old, who will surely get better with match time.

The opponents get no easier in Stockholm on Wednesday night, with Barcelona in town and Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez set to feature. If Amartey starts and survives intact that would represent a significant tick in his column.
