20/21 CAF Champions League: Asante Kotoko declared 2-0 losers in Al Hilal game

Published on: 06 January 2021

Asante Kotoko has been booted out of this season’s CAF Champions League competition after being declared 2-0 losers in the second leg meeting with Al Hilal.

The Porcupine Warriors club lost the first leg of the game against the Sudanese opponent by a goal to nil at the Accra Sports Stadium last month.

Billed to face off with the opponent today in Sudan, the game was called off after as many as seven players of Asante Kotoko tested positive for the Coronavirus disease.

With the new regulations stipulating that if a club is unable to field 11 players plus four on the bench, they automatically lose 2-0, it means that Asante Kotoko has lost the tie 3-0 on aggregate to Al Hilal.

As a result, the Ghana Premier League giants have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League.

Fortunately, though, the team gets to stay in Africa as they drop to the qualification stage of the Confederations Cup competition.
