20% of the Goals Petr Cech Has Conceded in the Premier League Have Come at Arsenal

Published on: 04 March 2017

Petr Cech hasn't had the greatest time lately. The Arsenal goalkeeper conceded five goals against a ruthless Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena as the Gunners had their Champions League hopes dashed for another season, before shipping another three against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.

With Arsene Wenger under increasing pressure and scrutiny regarding his future at the club, the defeat to Liverpool was particularly damaging. Alexis Sanchez was left on the bench as Jurgen Klopp's Reds dominated the first-half to lead 2-0 at the break.

Danny Wellbeck pulled one back for Arsenal before Georginio Wijnaldum wrapped up Liverpool's win in stoppage-time. And,after the Dutchman's goal, a worrying Cech stat emerged on Twitter.

20% of the PL goals Petr Cech has ever let in have come in his Arsenal career. Which began last season.

You might think that isn't all that interesting, but read on with the Tweet below which confirms Cech's consistent misery since joining the Gunners.

@DanWearsShirts 60 apps, 61 conceded for Arsenal, 333/241 for Chelsea

Suffice to say, Cech played behind some outstanding defences during his time at Chelsea, while Arsenal haven't always been rock-solid since he signed in 2015.

If anything, it highlights Arsenal's defensive woes more than any shortness in Cech's game. He may not be quite the imperious shot-stopper that he was ten years ago, but he's still one of the best around, despite what this stat might suggest.

Don't let it mislead you - Arsenal's defenders must shoulder much of this blame.
