2018 AWCON: SA's Thembi Kgatlana adjudged Player of the Tournament

South Africa forward Chrestinah Thembi Kgatlana has been crowned the Player of the Tournament at the just ended Africa Women's Cup of Nations at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday evening.

The 22-year-old also bagged the tournament's Top Scorer gong together with the Player of the Tournament accolade after scoring five goals at the end of the tournament.

The Bayana Bayana’s free-scoring youngster missed the opportunity to register her name on the scoresheet in their pulsating 0-0 thriller in the final despite threatening the goal area of the Nigerians a couple of times.

Nigeria emerged 4-3 winners from the spot kick after the goalless game to lift their ninth trophy.

However, Kgatlana had done enough winning three Woman of the Match awards in previous games which earned her the golden boot as well as the Player of the Tournament award.

She scored the late winner in their 1-0 opening Group B game against the Super Falcons at the Cape Coast Stadium on November 18 and finished that game as Woman of the Match.

Thembi currently plays for Houston Dash in the National Women's Soccer League in the USA.

South Africa and Nigeria will now prepare for next year's  FIFA Women's World Cup to be staged in France where they will be joined by Cameroon who booked their place on Friday.
