Published on: 25 January 2022

Confederation of African Football President (CAF) Patrice Motsepe will hold an emergency meeting today at 13:30 GMT at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium following deaths at Olembe Stadium.

At least eight people were killed and 38 injured as fans struggled to get access to a match between the hosts and Comoros in Yaounde.

The Olembe Stadium has a capacity of 60,000 but was not meant to be more than 80% full because of Covid-19 restrictions.

According to CAF, it is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired. CAF claims it is in constant communication with Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe has sent the General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba to visit the supporters in hospital in Yaoundé.

Football's world governing body Fifa said the "thoughts and prayers of the global football community" were with those affected.

The last 16 match between Cameroon and Comoros took place despite the incident and ended with a 2-1 win for the hosts.
