2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers: Local players to be snubbed by coach CK Akonnor in latest call-up

Published on: 25 September 2020

Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor is expected to omit locally based players from his 23-man squad for the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan, Footballghana.com understands.

This is as a result of the inactivity of the players in the country since March following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic which led to the cancellation of the 2019/2020 season.

CK Akonnor handed call-ups to four Ghana Premier League (GPL) stars in his first squad announcement since his appointment as head coach of Ghana's national team in January.

The four GPL players were goalkeeper Richard Attah of Accra Hearts of Oak, Kojo Amoako of Ash Gold, Habib Mohammed of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Yahya Mohammed of Aduana Stars.

All these players are set to miss out on the Black Stars call-up despite the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announcing the lift of ban on contact sports, paving the way for the resumption of competitive football activities in Ghana.

The former Asante Kotoko gaffer will announce his 23-man squad today at 16:30 GMT.
