2022 FIFA WC: Senegal, Ghana, other African countries must target beyond just going past group stage - Koulibaly

Senegal captain, Kalidou Koulibaly has stressed that he has no doubt an African country will one day lift the FIFA World Cup.

According to him, Africa’s problem has been the fact that many of the qualified countries go to the tournament with low expectations and targets.

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, the Chelsea defender indicated that Senegal, Ghana, and the other three countries that have qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup should aim beyond just going past the group stage.

"African nations are lacking self-esteem and self-awareness that they can really win a World Cup.

"We consider that going past the group stage is a good thing, but we should set higher goals for ourselves.

"I don't think that the French team or the English team are happy with going through the group stages - they want to go further,” Kalidou Koulibaly shared.

The Senegal captain continued, "We should have the same mindset. That's what I am trying to bring to Senegal.

"I think it's time that an African country delivers and wins the World Cup, because we are a very talented continent. We have great players."

Besides Ghana and Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, and Cameroon will represent Africa at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
