2022 FIFA World Cup: Ghana should prioritise qualification over revenge against Uruguay - Ex-Sunderland striker Gyan

Published on: 22 April 2022

Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghana to focus on qualifying out of Group H rather than eyeing revenge against Uruguay in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana's Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.  Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar as Uruguay went on to win the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals.

"The most important thing is to qualify from the group stage and go further. When we think about revenge, I don’t think, yes sometimes it good. Psychologically it boosts your morale, you are going for revenge."

"But, it’s a different generation altogether," Gyan told Metro TV.

Ghana, who make a return to the tournament after missing out on the last global showpiece in Russia take on Portugal in their first game in Group H on November 24 before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.
