2022 FIFA World Cup: How many players are on each team's squad?

Published on: 21 October 2022

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is fast approaching and coaches are on the verge of submitting their provisional squad ahead of the tournament.

Each of the 32 participating countries including Ghana must send a list of a minimum of 35 players up to a maximum of 55 by the end Friday, October 21 2022 in the first step in the selection process.

Coaches then have until November 14 to decide on their final list of 26 players by an 18 00GMT deadline.

The final squad must come from the preliminary list, with no allowance for any late changes of mind over the next three weeks, FIFA’s tournament rules and regulations stipulate.

Now how many players will be on each team's squad for the World Cup?

FIFA has confirmed that this year's World Cup will see few changes including increasing the number players in each team's squad. An allowable player cap from 23 players to 26 players for the upcoming tournament.

The increment of players is due to the unique timing of the World Cup in the global calendar, as well as the broader context of the disruptive effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on squads before and during tournaments.

This means that Ghana coach Otto Addo will be able to name a 26-man squad for the global showpiece.

Ghana will face Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H of the global showpiece which takes place between November 21 and December 18, 2022.

Black Stars will take on Switzerland in another preparatory game on November 17, seven days before their opening game at the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Portugal.
