2022 FIFA World Cup: Result of draw gives Ghana an opportunity to avenge Uruguay injustice

Published on: 01 April 2022

The Ghana Black Stars will have the chance to avenge the defeat to Uruguay some 12 years ago when the team faces the South Americans at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

This is because Ghana has been pitted in the same group as Uruguay for this year’s global showpiece scheduled to be staged in Qatar.

Although many would be worried about the opponents in the group, some believe the pairing against Uruguay has come at the right time for the Black Stars to avenge the injustice suffered at the 2010 world cup stage in South Africa.

In the quarter-finals of the tournament, Ghana faced Uruguay. Following a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time, the contest travelled into extra time.

Ghana almost scored to win the game but striker Luis Suarez denied the Black Stars victory when he used his hand to stop the ball from entering the net.

Subsequently, Asamoah Gyan wasted the penalty kick as Ghana went on to lose 4-2 to Uruguay on penalties.

Since then, Ghana has been waiting for a chance to get one over the South American national team.

With the two national teams drawn in Group H of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Black Stars have been presented with a fine opportunity to get one over Uruguay.
