2022 FIFA World Cup: There are high expectations for Senegal to excel after winning 2021 AFCON - Koulibaly

Senegal captain, Kalidou Koulibaly has disclosed that the Teranga Lions will be aiming to do well at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, the primary goal for the Senegal national team will be to go past the group stage after failing to achieve that feat at the 2018 tournament.

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Kalidou Koulibaly noted that after winning the 2021 AFCON, it is obvious there will be a lot of expectations for Senegal as well.

"This Afcon trophy is going to raise self-awareness for the World Cup. We will be willing to do better.

"Our first goal is going to go through the group stages because in 2018 we didn't,” the Chelsea defender noted.

Kalidou Koulibaly continued, "The whole country will expect a lot from us, but the World Cup is just at another level. Every player dreams to play in a World Cup so going there and qualifying after the group stage will be good, and then we will fix our goals step-by-step.

"We will go there well-prepared. It's coming soon but we must also be careful because a lot can happen [beforehand]."

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Senegal has been drawn in Group A. The Teranga Lions will face off with host Qatar, Ecuador, and the Netherlands.
