2022 World Cup Playoffs: Three key things we learned from Ghana v Nigeria

Published on: 25 March 2022

Ghana put on a fight in the FIFA World cup qualifiers to record a 0-0 stalemate against favourites Nigeria at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday.

Here are the three things we learned from this game.

We are not a long ball team

During the encounter, the Black Stars resorted to long balls to carve open their opponents. This plan did not work because the attackers could not connect the balls floated. In the first half the Black Stars would have been out of sight by two goals but the attackers were not clinical and composed in front of the goal.

Felix Afena-Gyan makes long awaited debut

The AS Roma youngster made his debut this evening. He was given a great task to leading the line against Nigeria. He did impress, very sharp on the ball. His evening ended when he was substituted due to an injury.

We still can’t score goals

The Black Stars saw much of the ball and went on several counter attacks but nothing came from the attack. The final pass to the attackers was also missing when the game progressed. The set piece opportunities that Black Stars got was squandered by the players.
