2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Frimpong Manso raises concerns about Felix Kyei’s exclusion from Black Stars final squad

Bibiani Goldstars coach Frimpong Manso is concerned about the exclusion of Medeama goalkeeper Felix Kyei from the Black Stars final squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Yellow and Mauve goalkeeper was named in the 55-man provisional squad released two-weeks ago but was dropped from the final 27-man squad for the tournament.

Reacting to the squad, the former Ghana international expressed he expected Felix Kyei to make the final squad as he believes he could compete in the teams goalkeeping department.

“I thought Felix Kyei would make the final Black Stars squad because I felt he could compete in the goalkeeping department but all the same, some players from the local scene made the cut. I think three players from the domestic league is okay. Truth be told, it will be difficult for any of the players selected from the local scene to start for the Black Stars”

“It will be difficult for Jonathan Sowah and other players to start ahead of certain players in the team. From Lamptey and co, I don’t think any of the players can command a starting role at the Black Stars” he said on Kessben FM monitored by Footballghana.com.

Ghana have opened camp in Kumasi as preparations continue for the Nations Cup next week.

The Black Stars are placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024.

Ghana have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.
