2023 AFCON qualifiers: Chris Hughton expected to ring changes against Angola

Published on: 20 March 2023

Chris Hughton is expected to make changes to the Black Stars starting line-up that played at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, for the match against Angola on Thursday, March 23, in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

As for the players who started at the World Cup, some of them could lose their positions while others are expected to maintain their places. Among the goalkeepers, Lawrence Ati Zigi is still expected to keep his place in the team, because Joseph Wollacott and Abdul Manaf Nurudeen have not played much since the tournament. Wollacott has still not featured for Charlton Athletic’s senior side since the World Cup because of his injury issues and has just recovered, while Manaf has played only one game after the Mundial.

At the right-back position, Denis Odoi is expected to take over from Alidu Seidu and Tariq Lamptey, who are still dealing with injuries. Alidu is out of the squad because of injuries, while Lamptey has only just returned to training and hasn’t played competitive football in about three weeks.

The center-back pairings could also change, as Daniel Amartey is out of form at the moment, and it remains to be seen if Chris Hughton will stick with Mohammed Salisu, who has just returned from injury. At left-back, Gideon Mensah is expected to play the leading role in the absence of injured Baba Rahman.

The midfield pairings are also expected to change because of how Mohammed Kudus has played lately at Ajax and could be moved to more advanced positions. Thomas Partey and Abdul Salis Abdul Samed are thought to be constants, while another player will be drafted in to support them.

More changes could be seen as in-form Joseph Paintsil returns to the squad and could be handed a starting berth, while Jordan Ayew, Andre Ayew, Inaki Williams, and Osman Bukari are also expected to fight for positions.
