2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana coach Chris Hughton speaks on Inaki Williams goal drought in Black Stars

Published on: 27 March 2023

Ghana coach Chris Hughton has offered support to under-fire Black Stars forward Inaki Williams.

The 28-year-old is yet to score for the Black Stars since making his debut on September 23, 2022 against Brazil.

The Athletic Bilbao striker has gone six games without a goal with Ghanaians raising concerns about Inaki’s firepower.

Williams, who featured in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar without scoring, was given a starting position in the matchday three clash at Baba Yara Stadium against Angola but was substituted in the second half without a goal to his name.

“Inaki is a very good player playing in a good team in a good league. I think it’s not all about goals, he plays consistently for his team”

“He is a player that make a lot of runs, he stretches play and sometimes benefit other players. So I think with regards to his goal scoring it will come but sometimes it doesn’t come as quick as you want, what’s important for us is his contribution in a game for the team” he said.

Inaki is expected to lead the lines when Ghana face Angola in Luanda on Monday at 4pm.

Ghana sit top of Group E with seven points after three games, three points clear off second-place Angola while Central African Republic sit third with four points.

The Black Stars will secure qualification to the continental showpiece to be hosted by Ivory Coast if they beat Angola in Luanda.
