2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Ghana star Mohammed Kudus to join Black Stars camp today

Published on: 09 January 2024

West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus is expected to join his Black Stars teammates in camp on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Kudus' arrival will bring the total number of players in camp to 27, the full complement of players invited to the tournament.

The midfielder, who has been nursing a slight injury, has yet to join his teammates who commenced training on January 3 in Kumasi.

The former FC Nordjaelland star arrived in Accra few days ago as he continues his recovery from injury. He missed the Black Stars pre-AFCON friendly clash against Namibia on Monday night.

However, Ghana coach Chris Hughton has confirmed his star midfielder will join the Black Stars camp today as they continue their preparations for the continental showpiece.

“We’ve been in regular communication with him and his club. He thus has an injury and is recovering from that injury and will join us on Tuesday” he said after Ghana’s friendly against Namibia.

The Black Stars will be competing for the title in neighbouring country, Ivory Coast this month as the search for a fifth AFCON title continues.

Ghana will open their account against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, 2024 before taking on Egypt and Mozambique on January 18 and 22 respectively in Group B.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13 through to February 11, 2024.

Ghana have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982. However, they have experienced defeat in three finals since then, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties and Egypt in 2010, as well as a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.
