2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Mozambique vs Ghana preview

Published on: 22 January 2024

The Black Stars of Ghana return to action in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament today, Monday, January 22.

Ghana will later tonight take on Mozambique in the final Group B game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The Black Stars must win convincingly with goals to stand a chance of advancing to the next stage of the continental showpiece.

Ahead of the all-important game, here is a preview focusing on the two countries, form, head-to-head, and match details.

Mozambique

Nicknamed the Mambas, the Mozambique national team has one point after playing two matches at the 2023 AFCON.

The Mambas started their campaign at the tournament with a strong performance that saw the team holding record champions Egypt to a 2-2 draw.

After that match, Mozambique hoped for a win against Cape Verde but it was not meant to be.

Cape Verde had too much quality and won that game 3-0.

With just one win from the last five matches, the form of Mozambique is not good heading into the Ghana clash.

Ghana

The Black Stars on the other hand are not enjoying a better form themselves. Ghana commenced the 2023 AFCON in a game against Cape Verde and lost 2-1.

In their second game, the Black Stars improved their performance and held Egypt to a 2-2 draw.

Also with just one point from two games, the Black Stars just like Mozambique cannot afford to lose the final Group B game.

Head-to-head

The last time Ghana played against Mozambique was back in 2016. That game ended in a goalless draw.

Before that, Ghana had won the first two meetings by 2-0 and 3-1 scorelines respectively.

While today’s game would be different, the Black Stars are confident of a win.

Match details:

The game between Ghana and Mozambique is scheduled to kick off at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.

The game will kick off at 8 pm.

Simultaneously, Cape Verde will be playing Egypt in the other Group B game.
