Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, says they were confident in Black Stars' chances at the just-ended 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament despite their early exit.

At the 34th edition of the AFCON in Ivory Coast, the West African country who were hoping to win their fifth title for the second time suffered a group phase elimination.

Ghana opened their campaign with a  2-1 defeat against Cape Verde before drawing 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique. The Black Stars finished 3rd in Group B with two points out of a possible nine.

Reacting to the horrendous performance of the Black Stars, Mr Asante-Twum said they were confident about the chances of the team since the team had good preparations ahead of the tournament.

He also added that they compared the squad to other teams and concluded that the team could progress to the next round of the tournament.

"I am sure when we were going to this tournament, we were upbeat about our chances because we believed that the team prepared well," he told Joy News.

"We knew we had put in place a good technical team and we knew the players selected for the tournament were good enough. We had compared our side to our teams and we knew had a good chance to progress in the tournament.

"There was nobody and even the players believed we would exit at the group phase because from the preparations and our arrival and to our first game which did not go well, the players believed it was still possible.

Reflecting on the matches against Egypt and Mozambique, Asante-Twum cited various factors that hampered their performance and ultimately led to their failure to progress.

"When you cast your mind back to the game against Egypt and Mozambique, you could see certain factors affected our performance and that prevented us from qualifying for the next round of the tournament," he added.

The poor performance of the team has led to the sacking of Chris Hughton and his technical team. Meanwhile, a five-member committee is currently working to recommend a coach to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Multiple reports in the media suggest that Otto Addo is leading the race for the vacant coaching job.
