The Ghanaian U20 male national team, known as the Black Satellites, clinched their first win of the 2023 African Games by defeating The Gambia on Tuesday evening.
Playing at the Accra Sports Stadium, the Black Satellites managed to score in both halves, securing a 2-0 victory over their West African counterparts.
This triumph in their second Group A match propels Ghana to the top of their group with four points from two matches, placing them in a favorable position to advance to the tournament’s semifinals.
Ghana took the lead just 12 minutes into the game, much to the delight of the home crowd, courtesy of Musibau Aziz’s goal.
The early advantage provided the Black Satellites with momentum heading into halftime. After the break, Abdul Aziz Issah, a promising talent from Dreams FC, doubled Ghana’s lead four minutes into the second half, further solidifying their control of the match.
Despite a missed penalty by Aziz in the 75th minute, Ghana maintained their dominance on the field.
Although The Gambia managed to pull one goal back through Ebrimah Ceesay in the 83rd minute, it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit. Jerry Afriyie’s stoppage-time goal sealed the victory for the Black Satellites, resulting in a final score of 3-1.
The resilient performance showcased Ghana’s determination and skill, securing a crucial win in their quest for success in the tournament.
Looking ahead, Ghana’s next challenge is a matchup against Benin on Saturday, marking their final group stage game.
