2023 U-23 AFCON: Ghana to face Ethiopia or Algeria in final round of qualifiers after DR Congo disqualification

Published on: 26 February 2023

Ghana has been drawn to play against the winner of the play-off round between Ethiopia and Algeria in the 3rd and final round of qualifiers for the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) disqualified DR Congo from the qualifiers for fielding an unqualified player in matches against Ethiopia and Algeria.

It means Ethiopia and Algeria will now face off in a two-legged play-off round instead of DR Congo to determine who will play against Ghana.

The first leg of the play-off round is scheduled to take place between March 8-9 in Ethiopia, while the second leg will be held between March 12-13 in Algeria.

The winner of this play-off round will advance to face Ghana in the 3rd round of qualifiers.

The U-23 Africa Cup of Nations is a qualifying tournament for the Olympic football tournament, and the top three teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympic men's football tournament in Paris.

The fourth-place team will play in the AFC-CAF playoffs to decide the final slot for the Olympics.

The 2023 edition of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in Morocco between Thu, Nov 2, 2023 – Sun, Nov 26, 2023.
