2023 U23 AFCON: Black Meteors’ preparations won’t over concentrate on North African teams - Fred Acheampong

Frederick Acheampong, the Management Committee Chairman of Ghana’s U23 national team, the Black Meteors, has disclosed the team will not over concentrate on North African teams when preparing for the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The North African teams have been tagged as the most dangerous ones going into the tournament in Morocco later this year during the off season.

Morocco and Egypt are the only North African teams to qualify for the tournament, with the Black Meteors sidestepping Algeria in the final round of qualifying to book their slot.

“There are only two North African teams that qualified for the tournament, the rest are drawn from different parts of Africa,” he said in an interview with Citi Sports.

“We don’t only have to concentrate on North Africa; we also need to engage others from different parts of Africa because they are also participating.

“We are looking to qualify [for the 2024 Olympics Games], it might happen that we might draw one North African team and the rest would not come from North Africa. If we focus mainly on North Africa, we might not get what we want.”
