AC Milan fall to Fiorentina thanks to Chiesa wonderstrike

Published on: 22 December 2018

Fiorentina got their Christmas wish as they made it two Serie A wins in a row thanks to a 1-0 victory over AC Milan at the Stadio San Siro on Saturday night.

A lone Federico Chiesa strike was enough to seal all three points for Stefano Pioli’s men, following on from last weekend’s win over Empoli, it also ended a four-match streak away from home without victory.

As a result, Fiorentina are now up to seventh in the Serie A table, two points behind their opponents who drop to fifth after Lazio beat Cagliari earlier in the day.

Milan started well with Hakan Calhanoglu having the first real effort of the game, but his strike was straight at Alban Lafont.

Again the Turk got himself into a good position, but put his strike wide, then he managed to get himself free in the area but smashed wide from close range.

Ricardo Rodriguez had a thunderous strike saved by Lafont, then Calhanoglu saw a low effort cleared off the line by Nikola Milenkovic.

After the break, Suso managed to dribble past two Fiorentina defenders on the right side, but was denied by Lafont from a tight angle.

Higuain forced a good save from Lafont with a header from 12 yards out. However, it was Fiorentina who took the lead with 17 minutes left to play.

Chiesa found space on the left, cut in and curled a brilliant effort into the far corner, just out of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s reach.

In the closing staged Milan went all out for an equaliser and it almost came from the head of Rodriguez but Lafont magnificently tipped it over the crossbar.
