AC Milan submit appeal against European ban

On Monday, AC Milan filed their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as they look to overturn a one-year ban from European competition.

Last week, UEFA’s Adjudicatory Committee announced that the Diavolo would not be permitted to take part in next season’s Europa League as a result of their failure to comply with Financial Fair Play restrictions.

A date has not yet been established for a hearing in Lausanne but Milan have submitted their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the hope that UEFA’s punishment can be reduced.

It is reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport that there are three key points to the club’s appeal: they were under pressure from responsibilities to previous management, a look at other club cases who were not punished as severely and a necessity to modify their business plan.

“I don’t know what our percentage of success is but I can assure that we will give everything until the 90th minute and beyond to ensure that this sentence is changed,” said Marco Fassone of the Rossoneri’s appeal.

“The fans should not be worried or scared. We will still have some money to spend and our project doesn’t violate any budgets. The sanction we receive should also be a proportionate one.

“Exclusion from Europe goes beyond that though. A club like ours doesn’t deserve that and I hope that the judges will decide that.”

The likeliest options open after the CAS appeal are the upholding of the original ruling, a complete reversal of it or suspending the sentence and allowing Milan to take part in the Europa League, before revisiting the situation next summer.
