AFCON 2019: Andre Ayew seeks to lead Ghana to end title drought

Captain for the Black Stars of Ghana, Andre Dede Ayew is seeking to lead Ghana to end her 37-year wait for continental glory as they prepare to start off their campaign in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Egypt.

The West African country has not been able to conquer the rest of Africa for a very long time and has one of the longest trophy droughts on the continent. The last time they lifted the prestigious tournament was way back in 1982 when it was hosted by Libya.

Since then, all attempts to win the trophy to take their tally to 5 has not been successful. All of the country’s previous 5 campaigns have ended in a heartbeat for the team and the entire country

Though they have managed to make it to the semi-finals or finals of the competition in the last five editions, they are yet to get their hands on the trophy.

This year, they are set to make another representation in the tournament which is currently ongoing in Egypt. They have been pitted in Group F alongside defending Champions Cameroon, Benin, and Guinea Bissau.

This time around they are going to be captained by Swansea attacker Andre Ayew who has been chosen with the belief that he can finally end the jinx that has denied the team the privilege of winning the tournament.

The team will play their first match of the tournament against Benin at the Ismaily Stadium on Tuesday evening. New Captain Dede Ayew will have the armband on his hand and will be hoping to start his era with an emphatic win over the Squirrels.
