AFCON 2019: Black Stars players must sacrifice to win tourney – George Alhassan

Ex-Black Stars striker George Alhassan has called on the 23 players selected to represent Ghana at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to make sure they sacrifice for the motherland to help them win the trophy.

The West African Country has failed to conquer the continent since 1982 when they last lifted the trophy. Ahead of the 2019 (AFCON), they are hoping to end a long 37-year wait in order to win their 5th title.

Speaking to Class FM ahead of the tourney, a member of the 1982 winning squad, George Alhassan has stressed that everything has been provided for the team and they must put their bodies on the line for the team to try and win the gold at the end of the tournament.

“Nobody has done that for the Black Stars but this particular preparation was superb so I don’t see why they should go there without dying for mother Ghana. They have to die”.

“The players should sacrifice a little bit for mother Ghana. Without sacrificing, they can’t win the tournament. It is not going to be easy. It is going to be difficult. Let’s pray things to work well for Ghana otherwise, it is not going to be easy”, the top scorer of the 1982 AFCON noted.

Ghana finds herself in Group F of the 2019 AFCON where they are expected to face the likes of Benin, Guinea Bissau, and defending champions Cameroon.
