AFCON 2019: Kwesi Appiah refuses to accept favorites tag despite Egypt-Cameroon elimination from tournament

Ghana Coach James Kwesi Appiah has refused to accept the favorite tag for his team despite the fact that Egypt, Cameroon, and Morocco have all been eliminated from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana who is looking to break a 37-year old jinx to ensure she wins this year’s AFCON has been handed a major boost following the dispatching of defending champions Cameroon, as well as host nation Egypt and Herve Renard’s Morocco team.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Sunday ahead of Ghana’s round of 16 match against Tunisia, Black Stars head coach James Kwesi Appiah noted that no team at this year’s AFCON can be touted as favorites due to some of the results it has produced.

“We are not the favorites after the formal champions and the tournament hosts exited as well as Morocco. As you see in this competition there are no favorites but we will give our best to qualify”, the gaffer said.

Ghana will honour her round of 16 date with Tunisia later tonight at the Ismailia Stadium. Kickoff is at exactly 19:00GMT.
