AFCON 2019: Our goal is to progress and fight for the title – Jonathan Mensah

Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah has indicated that the goal of Ghana is to progress from the round of 16 and continue their quest to emerge as winners of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

After winning a 4th title way back in 1982 when the tournament was hosted in Lybia, Ghana has failed at all attempts to conquering the content in the past 37 years despite making the finals 2 times in the last 5 editions.

The team is participating in this year’s continental showdown and have managed to qualify for the round of 16 where they are billed to play the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia later today.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference on Sunday, Jonathan Mensah noted that the main focus of the team is to lift this year’s tournament and it is not going to change simply because some of the favorites have been eliminated from the tournament.

“Some of the big teams exited the tournament but that doesn’t change our goals. We came in very strong trying to progress and win the ultimate. So whether the big teams are still in there or not we still have the same goal and we just need to focus on that”, the Columbus Crew defender said.

Ghana will take to the Ismailia Stadium later today to battle the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament. The match will kick off at 19:00GMT.
