African football agent Saif Rubie commends changes to AFCON timing

African football agent Saif Rubie insists changes to the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations of a good thing for footballers from the continent.

Saif Rubbie who represents a lot of African Footballers, including Ghana’s Christian Atsu, revealed there have been times when some offers had to be cancelled because the clubs feared losing a player to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rubie who also represents former Ghana coach, Avram Grant, indicated the changes will affect players from the continent in a positive way.

"Some clubs 100% told me they would not bring in a player if they were tied to the Cup of Nations. Now it will mean they don't have that concern," he told BBC World Service.

"The flip side is they will be playing in the summer, so could be late for the start of the season though it's better to have a player missing part of August than most of January and February.

"I believe it will mean a player has more of a chance of being signed as opposed to under the old schedule."

CAF’s executive committee and other stakeholders in football met to amend the timing of AFCON, which has now been moved from January/February to June/July.

The number of nations participating has also been increased from 16 to 24, starting in Cameroon 2019.
