Alexsandar Mitrovic Return Will Provide Newcastle With Requisite Lift to Boost Their Title Charge

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic will return from his four game suspension on Tuesday evening against Cheltenham Town.

The Serbian missed the start of the season because of a red card he picked up for a horrible tackle on Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker during the Magpies' final Premier League game of last season.

But thanks to the hustle and bustle of the Championship calendar, the former Anderlecht man has only been kicking his heels for two weeks as United took on Fulham, Huddersfield Town, Reading and Bristol City all in the space of 15 days.

His return to first team action will probably be in the starting line up for the Football League Cup second round game on Tuesday. MItrovic will be very short of match fitness and Toon manager Rafa Benitez will be keen to get him up to speed as quickly as possible.

Newcastle have lacked a cutting edge during recent performances as well as a plan B when things haven't quite been going their way in front of goal. Dwight Gayle has hit the ground running, but there have been few other danger man from open play.

Mitrovic will bring that into the side - and Gayle is looking forward to playing alongside the target man, withthethe former Crystal Palace striker telling theChronicle:"Mitro's coming back on Tuesday, so hopefully he can come in and work hard with me as well up front."

With wingers like Matt Ritchie in the squad, the Serbian should be able to expect plenty of high quality service from the wide areas. Geordies observedlast season that if the deliveries are good, the Serbian will be able to put away the chances.

The increased physicality that the 21-year-old offers in the air and around the box will help unsettle opposition defences and allow the Magpies to do more damage when they have the ball in attacking areas.

Playing Gayle and Mitrovic up front together could have its uses as well. With the quick feet and excellent finishing ability of the diminutive striker, Gayle should have no problems feeding off knock-downs and lay-offs from his bigger strike partner.

It's excellent news for the whole squad that Mitrovic is back in contention for the first team so soon; now they just have to work together to reap the benefits.
