Allegri: This is football, not the PlayStation

In light of a recent dip in Juventus’ performances, Massimiliano Allegri has called for calm and insisted that football cannot be viewed like a video game.

The Bianconeri weren’t at their best in their 2-1 win over Lazio last week and followed it up with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Atalanta in midweek to surrender their Coppa Italia crown.

That has led to questions over their form at present, although the man in charge believes that those are unfounded as he also began to look ahead to European challenges.

“Juventus have won seven league titles in the last seven years and reached the Champions League final in two of the last four. When I arrived, there was a fear of not being able to beat Malmo but I thought I could reach the final and win it with this team,” Allegri told the assembled media.

“In Europe, there are six or eight teams who can reach the semi-final which means that four miss out. I’ve heard that Juventus are finalists so I’m going to ask UEFA to send us directly to the final.

“Football is not the PlayStation. We must try to keep winning like we did in previous years. However, to succeed we need luck as well as skill. That’s why lifting trophies is an extraordinary thing and not normal.

“Playing football well is the easiest thing in the world, the difference is being able to win when playing well.”

Allegri also revealed that despite the injury scare around Giorgio Chiellini, he is optimistic that the centre-back will not miss the Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid as first feared.

“There is optimism for us around Chiellini,” he added. “It is nothing serious and in 10 to 15 days, we think he’ll be ok.”
