Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata became the first fourth substitute in the entire history of men's competitive football when he came on the 112th minute of Los Blancos' 4-2 extra-time victory over Japanese side KashimaAntlers in the Club World Cup final on Sunday.

The Spain international replaced Cristiano Ronaldo after the four-time Balon d'Or winner scored a hat-trick to help Madrid seal the win.

FIFA approved the trial of a fourth substitute in extra time of selected competitions, and with the Club World Cup being one of them, Zinedine Zidane took full advantage of the luxury.

Antlers also used a fourth substitute in the match, bringing onShuhei Akasaki for Ryota Nagaki two minutes after Morata created history.

Madrid were given a bit of a scare, however, going down 2-1 after Karim Benzema scored an early opener. But Ronaldo, being Ronaldo, led the charge and scored three goals, with two of them coming in the extra period, to earn the Champions League holders another piece of silverware.
