France-based defender, Nicholas Opoku has joined the Black Stars of Ghana in Luanda ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match against Angola on Monday.

His last-minute call-up became necessary after two top centre-backs in the camp of the Black Stars suffered various injuries.

The injured players set to miss the Angola match tomorrow include Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu.

In a statement confirming the call-up of Nicholas Opoku, the Ghana FA said it is to give Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton more options.

“Nicholas Opoku has joined the Black Stars in Luanda for the Africa Cup of Nations Group E clash against Angola on Monday.

“The Amiens defender has been drafted in to provide options for Coach Chris Hughton following the absence of Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku. The two defenders who have been key members of the Ghana squad in recent times were left out of the travelling party due to injuries,” the GFA statement explained.

The game between Angola and Ghana is scheduled to kick off at 4 pm on Monday. The game will be played at the 11-November stadium in Luanda.
