ANCELOTTI EXPECTS HARD-FOUGHT MATCH IN GENK

Published on: 02 October 2019

Carlo Ancelotti spoke in his pre-match press conference ahead of Genk-Napoli, Matchweek 2 of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League group stage.

“We're going to have to dig in and fight tomorrow, otherwise we could well come unstuck. We must get it very clear in our minds just how difficult this game is going to be. We know we'll be facing a very determined team and the crowd will be really up for it. It's their first Champions League match at home and emotion can play a big factor. I have no doubt that my team is up to the task. I'm confident and I know my players will produce a big performance.”

Did you expect more from Napoli at this point?

“I always expect more from them because I know just how good my squad is. I think they have more potential than they even realise and I can see it taking shape.”

Is it true that you had a go at your players after the Brescia game?

"First of all, I don't like that term. If you think I 'have a go' at my team then you don't know me. I told my players everything I had to say. The tone of your voice is relative – what matters is communicating and speaking with each other. I'm not at all angry that we had to dig in against Brescia. In fact, I preferred the last half an hour to the rest of the game because we showed we're able to fight. Being able to dig in and defend is fundamental in football. I watch hundreds of games and I challenge you to show me a team that doesn't have to dig in at times – even the best teams in the league do that.

“I'm actually calmer when my side batten down the hatches than when they pour forward on the attack.”

Will Arek Milik get a go in the Champions League tomorrow?

"Milik doesn't need to 'get a go'. He had some fitness issues and didn't train properly during the summer. He's fine now and if he plays he'll do his bit for the team.”

How can Napoli improve?

“I think tactically speaking we have a clear identity. What needs to improve is the condition of some of our players, which is normal since we're at the start of the season. As I said, I'm aware of just how good my squad is.”
