The England international will enter the final year of his current deal in the summer if he doesn't extend in the coming months, leaving him staring down the barrel of an exit from the Emirates despite six goals and as many assists in all competitionsthis season.

The Gunners are currently believed to be working flat out on contracts for Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as the key pair's deals begin to wind down, but a number of players - including Oxlade-Chamberlain andSanti Cazorla - are also looking on anxiously as their own contracts come towards their end.

Wenger's 'confusing' comments on the former Southampton man's deal came when he was trying to explain away a lack of progress ondeals for Ozil and Sanchez last week, saying: "We work as well on Giroud and on many players. There are six or seven cases at the moment but that is the usual case, it is every year like that.

We have started talking to Oxlade-Chamberlain, we've started with Santi as well and will certainly extend with him. We will work with Giroud as well and on many players. That explains to you why we have a lot of work to do, but you are only interested in two cases.
