Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained how Alexis Sanchez's contractual situation is different to that of Robin van Persie.

After Van Persie made it clear that he was not ready to sign a new deal with Arsenal back in 2012, manager Wenger decided to offload the Dutchman to rivals Manchester United in order to avoid losing him for free - the decision proved to be a huge aberration on the part of the Gunners.

There is now a grave danger that Arsenal might once again be forced to part with another star player this summer as Sanchez is set to enter the final year of his deal at the Emirates Stadium, but Wenger has explained that the situation with the Chilean is different than that of van Persie due to the fact that he is currently at a younger age.

The Frenchman explained: “I let Van Persie go in the last year of his contract because Van Persie was 29, going on 30, and he was signing a long-term contract. That is not the case with Alexis. Alexis is 28. So that is a bit different."
