Arsenal Reportedly in Pole Position to Sign West Ham Talisman Ahead of January Transfer Window

Arsenal have been made the bookies'favourites to sign West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet, according to the Express.

The paper says that the Gunners have been made favourites to sign the Frenchman, after he openly declared that he may not stay at West Ham given the apparent threat of relegation to the Championship.

The Hammers have sincethumped Swansea City 4-1 at the Liberty Stadium on Boxing Day and climbed up to 11th in the Premier League table with their sixth win of the season.

But Payet, who scored in the victory, could still leave the London Stadium club, with Arsene Wenger a keen admirer of the star.

The appeal of Payet to Wenger would be his versatility - the former Marseille man can play wide left, but can often been seen drifting in-field to support the striker. His set-piece ability is also very well-documented.

Arsenal's left side is currently contested between youngster Alex Iwobi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which would probably see Payet selected to start most games if he made the switch across London.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a sensational debut season last term for the Hammers, drawing praise for his creativity and eye for the spectacular. He eventually made it into the PFA's team of the season.

But this time around, Payet has not managed tohit the same heights, often cutting a subdued figure during some of West Ham's tougher times this season.

Speculation has linked the Euro 2016 star to the Emirates Stadium on numerous occasions since last summer's tournament ended, but will Wenger actually make an official bid for one of the Premier League's most creative talents?
