Arsenal Sweating Over Sanchez Future as PSG Target Delays Contract Decision Until End of Season

Published on: 06 February 2017

Alexis Sanchez will wait until the end of the season before a conclusion to his protracted contract saga at Arsenal is reached.

The striker is reportedly waiting to see where the Gunners end up finishing in this season's Premier League standings, according to Goal journalist Loic Tanzi, and will only put pen-to-paper on a new deal if he is content with the club's final place in England's top flight.

In the event that Arsenal fail to finish in the top four positions, however, Sanchez could call time on his career at the Emirates, with the Independent claiming that Paris Saint-Germain will look to offer him a route out of English football.

Sanchez has been locked in discussions with Arsenal's representatives throughout the course of the 2016/17 campaign, with the club's hierarchy keen to tie him down to a new deal.

The Chile international's current contract expires in under 18 months' time, but talks have reached an impasse in recent months over Sanchez's apparent demands to see his wage packet increased to an eye-watering £290,000-a-week.

Arsenal's strict salary structure prevents them from paying such extortionate wages to their first-team stars, and the club has no plans to break their own glass ceiling to accomodate both Sanchez and fellow contract rebel Mesut Ozil, who is also believed to be holding out for an increase in his own wages.

Sanchez's future could now lie away from the North London-based side if he becomes frustrated over talks no longer progressing, and his alleged unhappiness would be enhanced further if the Gunners fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Arsenal currently lie fourth in the league standings, behind league leaders Chelsea, North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, after Arsene Wenger's men suffered back-to-back defeats in the space of four days.

Wenger's side sit just one point above Liverpool and two above Manchester United, who occupy fifth and sixth respectively. If Arsenal fail to dine at UEFA's flagship club tournament for the first time in the Frenchman's reign, Sanchez is likely to depart as a result.

Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and clubs in China's Super League have all been linked with moves for the 28-year-old this term, but it is Ligue 1 champions PSG who are now the supposed frontrunners for his signature.

The French outfit could look to pair Sanchez in attack with Sergio Aguero - Les Parisiens also being linked with an £80m offer for the Manchester City striker in Tuesday's media - though Sanchez's wage demands could prove to be a stumbling block in any possible transfer.

Sanchez has plundered 17 goals in 31 appearances this season, but he has become increasingly annoyed with his team-mates in recent weeks. The forward was seen throwing a tantrum following the 3-3 draw with Bournemouth in January, and was also caught sulking about being substituted in Arsenal's 4-0 win over Swansea later that month.
