Asante Kotoko management responds to reports of neglecting accident victims

Published on: 01 May 2023

The current management of Asante Kotoko have responded to the reports suggesting that they have neglected members of the club who were involved in an accident almost six years ago.

The playing body, technical team members and other official members of the club on July 12 2017 were involved in an accident in which one person died and several others sustained injuries.

The unfortunate news broke on their way to Kumasi after honouring their Ghana Premier League game against Inter Allies in Accra.

The accident occurred at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region. The team bus with registration number, AS 7329-13 was carrying a total of 35 people incurred the accident around 9:45 pm.

The accident claimed the life of the team’s deputy chief equipment officer, Thomas Obeng Asare and injured several of the playing body including the coach Steve Polack and his assistant Godwin Ablordey.

Players such as Baba Mahama, Ahmed Adams, Nana Berchie and Amos Frimpong sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Six years on, multiple reports suggest that some victims of the accident have been neglected with most of them living in dire health conditions.

However, a statement by the Nana Yaw Amponsah-led management on Sunday, April 30, says attempts to find a solution to ensure these accident victims are supported have proven futile.

He, however, added that the club will continue to engage the victims and produce a plan to “alleviate their situation” over the next few days.

READ FULL STATEMENT HERE:

Management have taken notice of disappointment pouring out in respect of lack of support for the victims of the accident which occurred in 2017.

Upon assuming office in 2020, Management and the Board sought to help find a solution to deal with this matter without success.

Management shall engage the Board again on the matter. In anticipation of approval from the Board, we have started engaging representatives of the victims and will come out with a short to medium-term plan to alleviate their situation in the coming days.

Thank you.
