'Assists Just as Important as Goals' Claims Misfiring Bayern Munich Forward

Published on: 27 February 2017

Bayern Munich stalwartThomas Muller has claimed that he is not worried about his goal drought in the Bundesliga this season.

The 27-year-old has endured a torrid season to date, registering one league goal, despite his tendency as a prolific goal-scorer.

Muller's dry spell is even more shocking considering the Bayern forward managed 20 league goals last season.

Muller, once again wasnot on target as Bayerncruised to an easy 8-0 win over Hamburg this weekend.Instead the German international was electing to focus on his two assists during the game, which he claimed are as valuable as goals.

"On this occasion, I was much more involved in the play than in the previous games," he told the DFB (German FA) website.

"There were many situations in which I was able to be actively involved in the play and shoot on goal, (although) again I didn't score.

"However, I can get over that. My assist for David is possibly the prime example that goals aren't everything for me when I can see my team-mates in better positions than me and can help them."

During the game, Muller had a clear opportunity to shoot on goal, but chose to insteadpass to teammate David Alaba, who easily dispatched hisshot from close range.

"It was a situation in which I could have shot myself “ free from seven meters out - but David and I were clearly two against one," Muller claimed.

"I saw him in the corner of my eye and it was clear what I had to do.

"Assists are just as important as goals for me," he added.

Muller has provided his teammates with nine assists this year, to help make up for hissubpar efforts in front of goal.

Bayern's 8-0 victory helped maintain their five point advantage over second placed RB Leipzig.

The Bavarian side face FC Koln on Saturday before travelling to London for the second round of their Champions League last 16 tie against Arsenal next week.
