Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone defended his players after their draw with Real Betis.

Atletico were fortunate to secure a 1-1 draw.

"We started well, but then they took control and were better and had chances," said Simeone.

"Then in the second half we tried to play a little more like ourselves, but the players were tremendously fatigued.

"Those that have played have had little rest, but they are wild animals because they show signs of life even though they're tired."

He also reflected on the season as a whole and was particularly impressed by the way they wrestled third place away from Sevilla in the second half of the campaign.

"For me, this has been the most difficult season since I arrived at the club," he explained.

"We have sadly had too many inconveniences to maintain much stability."
