Atletico Madrid Forward Antoine Griezmann 'Proud' After Making Champions League History

Published on: 21 February 2017

Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann has claimed he is "proud" to have become the club's record Champions League goalscorer after his strike in Tuesday night's 4-2 win against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Frenchman put his side 2-0 up in the first half after Saul Niguez's opener, before the German side pulled a goal back through Karim Bellarabi.

Kevin Gameiro then scored a penalty, before a Stefan Savic own goal, and a late Fernando Torres header ended an evening of breathtaking football.

And, after the game, Griezmann expressed his delight at scoring his 13th Champions League goal and overtaking Luis Aragones in the process.

"I am very happy for that," Griezmann said - viaESPN. "For me it makes me very proud to be part of the history of this club. I want to do the best possible, help the team as much as I can, and hopefully it can continue like this."

On the game, he added:"We knew it would be a difficult game, we wanted to win it and we did that. They made it difficult for us, with their pressing. But the coach's changes helped us and we have two goals' advantage now. We still have a big game to play, in front of our fans, and we hope to win it too."

Griezmann was also complimentary of teammate Gameiro, who has now provided seven assists for him this season.

"We talk often before the game about who will pass to who," Griezmann said. "We get on very well together as we are both scoring goals, and we hope it can continue like this."
