Spanish giants Atletico Madrid paid tribute to their loyalest fans before their La Liga match against Real Betis - by inviting them to act as mascots before the game.

The experience is normally reserved for young fans, but instead the clubturned the formula on its head and invited the some of the club's older supporters to join the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin and Filipe Luis before kickoff.

Well isn't this cute. Atletico Madrid had their oldest season tickets holders as mascots this evening ☺ pic.twitter.com/idGniierZM

The old timers will have seen their fair share of football matches and garnered a considerable amount of knowledge, and if they imparted any of that wisdom to their heroes then it certainly paid off.

Atletico kept Real Betis at bay and emerged as 1-0 winners thanks to Nicolas Gaitan's early strike. Although the experience was no doubt a heartening one, Atletico boss Diego Simeone could not get past the quiet atmosphere inside the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

"I played here for five years and have coached here for five more and I know everything [about the club]," Simeone said post-match, as quoted byGoal.

"When the atmosphere begins to quieten it irritates me a little. We tried to not let that feeling, that sense of tranquillity in the crowd, be transmitted on to the field.

"I don't like it when it's quiet."
