Atletico Madrid Midfielder Koke Has Record-Breaking Week Ahead of 25th Birthday

Published on: 07 January 2017

This week was one full of gifts for birthday boy, Koke, who achieved the second oftwo Atletico Madrid records in a week with a 2-0 win over Eibar.

At 24 years and 364 days old, the central midfielder became the youngest ever Atletico player to reach the 200 league appearance landmark - one year and 69 days younger than previous record-holder, Adrian Escudero.

Earlier in the week, Koke achieved his first milestone by becoming one of few Atletico Madrid players to have scored for the club in the league, Champions League and Copa del Rey with a goal in their 2-0 win over Las Palmas.

It is fair to say that Atletico have come a long way since Koke's debut for the club - a 5-2 loss to Barcelona. Barca are just three points ahead of Diego Simeone's men these days, with both sides trailing to Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid who are yet to lose this season.

Koke, whose full name isJorge Resurrección Merodio, has a decent goal tally for a man who is registered as a central midfielder with 21 goals and 61 assists in his first 200 games. Koke does, however, play on the wing sometimes for Simeone's side.

Since signing his first professional contract with the youth team in 2008, Koke has been at the club for his entire career. Given his hefty £50m market valuation, Koke looks unlikely to move away anytime soon, but this hasn't stopped rumours regarding a move to join compatriot David Silva, who also shares the same birthday, at Manchester City.

Atletico's win over Eibar kept them in fourth below Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla who are causing quite a stir in La Liga at the moment, where they currently sit in second.

Koke will get two days to enjoy his birthday before facing off against Las Palmas for the second leg of their Copa del Rey clash.
