The first part of the the plane's journey from Sao Paulo to Santa Cruz de la Sierra was delayed by an hour, and the late departure meant the refuelling was not possible as the airport in Cobija is closed during the night. The pilot insteadopted to fly directly from Santa Cruz de la Sierra to Medellín.

The plane had been on course to arrive safely, but requests to land with priority had been rejected by air-traffic control. Another place had a fuel leak and needed to land first, and after that Mr Guiroga declared anemergency.
