AXED: Liverpool, Man City target Van Dijk dropped as Pellegrino defends decision...

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino concedes Virgil van Dijk could be on the move after dropping him for defeat to Chelsea.

The Dutchman was linked with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in the morning's press.

After the 1-0 reverse, Pellegrino stated: “When I talk about a lack of connection it is when you are not mentally 100% on the pitch.

“In difficult moments for me obviously you have to come back to the foundations of the team, to the discipline of the team, and get them to think about the possibility they have to be in this club and in the Premier League.

"Not too many players are in this situation. Obviously we have to start to choose the players that want to help the club 100%. They are human beings and sometimes they don't have a good moment. I understand this. But their behaviour has to be committed with the club 100%."

Going into the game, Pellegrino could not rule out Van Dijk's sale.

He added: "I have my opinion, I have to give to the technical director and the chairman my opinion, but the club will decide what's best.

"I can't control the market, and I am not the owner of the players, I will recommend to keep our best player here, in the club."
