Barca Boss Enrique Claims His Side 'Deserved to Win' After Last-Gasp Equaliser at Villarreal

Published on: 08 January 2017

Barcelona drifted five points behind title rivals Real Madrid when they only managed a late equaliser against Villarreal on Sunday evening.

It looked as if a classy breakaway goal by the hosts had secured all three points, but in the dying minutes of the game Lionel Messi provided a moment of magic and bent a superb free kick into the top left-hand corner.

The Catalans controlled the possession, however were slack on more than occasion going forward, but BarcabossLuis Enrique felt his side were unfortunate not to leave with the win after throwing everything at the opposition.

The team deserved more, we deserved to win, but football is not always fair, the Asturian coach said after the game.

Villarreal are a team that try to play, they have quality players. They know their style of play well, with and without the ball.

We knew about the difficulty of the game against Villarreal, but we deserved to win. I have nothing more to say to my players, we played a great game.

The same feelings that I had in Bilbao, even better in fact. We created many chances against the team who has conceded the fewest goals in La Liga, although we were not as accurate as we could have been in the final metres.

There is plenty of the league still to play, we will definitely be fighting for it. We must continue improving and be even stronger to fix this form. The hardest thing in football is to score goals.

The result sees the Catalan giants stay in third, and with Madrid still holding a game in hand over Barca, they cannot afford many more nights like Sunday this season.
