Barca Defender Gerard Pique Continues War of Words With La Liga Officials After Draw With Villarreal

Published on: 08 January 2017

Gerard Pique is likely to find himself in deep trouble following another outburst at the conclusion of Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Villarreal on Sunday,in what wasthe Catalan's first La Liga fixture after the winter break.

Lionel Messi scored a wonderful late free kick to cancel out Nicola Sansone's 50th minute strike in a game that was littered with yet more controversy, after the visitors had two strong penalty appeals turned down.

Having been openlycriticalof officials over the last week, Pique did not hold back when offeringhis thoughts on the referee's performance, as hespoke toMarcaat the final whistle.

The 29-year-old also appeared to suggest that he had yet more evidence to provehis theoryof a bias towards arch-rivals Real Madrid.

The centre-back said:"There were two very clear handballs by Bruno.I have also seen Mascherano's, but we speak of intentions.

Pique: "The referees? You saw it. Each week they give me more reasons" #fcblive

"The referees? You saw it. Each week they give me more reasons.

"It's very clear what has happened today on the pitch so there is no need to say anything else."

Whilst Pique's comments are unlikely to sit well with La Liga chiefs, his actions on the pitch at full-time will not have done his cause much good, after he reportedly made a beeline forthe league's president, Javier Tebas, who was sat in the stands.

RAC1 suggest that Pique stood on the touchline and made reference to the referee's performance when heshouted at Tebas (as quoted byMarca):"Have you seen him? Yes you, have you seen him?"

The defender is yet to hear from the Spanish FA about his recent outbursts, but it is unlikely that this ongoing saga will end soon, as Barcelona now turn their attentions to Wednesday's crucial Copa del Rey second-leg meeting with Athletic Bilbao, where Luis Enrique's side will need to overturn a 2-1 aggregate scoreline, if they are to continue their defence of the trophy.
