Barcelona Look to Strengthen Midfield With Signing of Sevilla's Steven N'Zonzi

Barcelona have been linked with the signing of Sevilla midfielder Steven N'Zonzi.

N'Zonzi, who has previously plied his trade in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, is being targeted as a potential backup option to current defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are eying up a move for N'Zonzi, citing a possible lack of depth in defensive midfield. Busquets has been the chief enforcer since he broke into Barcelona's team, and has acted as the anchor of the side alongside the more creative likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic during his time at the Nou Camp.

Barca have strengthened in other positions over the past few years, with the club well stocked with goalies withMarc-André ter Stegen andJasper Cillessen scrapping over the number one jersey, while Samuel Umtiti and Jeremy Mathieu have acted as able deputies to first choice centre-backs Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano in recent years.

However, Barca's chances of signing N'Zonzi may be slim, with Sevilla's club president Sevillistas de Nervion recently stating: "I wouldn't sell N'Zonzi for any money in the world.

"He is very good and we're working on his new contract. We hope to be able to announce it very soon."

Should a new contract not materialise, N'Zonzi could be available for€30m due to the release clause in his current contract. N'Zonzi has featured in eight La Liga games so far this season, scoring once with the club currently third prior to their clash with Barcelona on Sunday evening.
