Barcelona president Bartomeu explains €700M Messi buyout clause

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has explained Lionel Messi's buyout clause in his new deal.

An increased buyout clause is the biggest change to the Argentine's extension, which will see him remain at the Camp Nou until 2021.

It will now take a fee of €700 million to tempt the forward away from Barcelona, and Bartomeu expressed his delight at the saga finally being put to an end.

"We are very satisfied with this contract, in June we signed one which was already in force," he explained.

"But with this one we have agreed on a new deal to adapt his buyout clause which is more in line with the current transfer market situation.

"He's been at this club since he was very young and we wanted to make sure that we kept him here.

"This contract prolongs the Messi-Barcelona relationship. He's the best player in football history and will remain until 2021 with a lot of desire and ambition."
