Barcelona Star Set to Miss Copa del Rey Final After Being Handed 2-Match Cup Suspension

Barcelona will be without Luis Suarez for their Copa del Rey final showdown with Alaves in May after the striker was banned for two matches by the Spanish Football Federation.

The 30-year-old received his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards in La Blaugrana's 1-1 semi-final second-leg clash with Atletico Madrid but, rather than sit out just one game, Suarez saw his ban doubled for his behaviour following his sending off.

The Metro revealed that Suarez's ban was lengthened to two Copa dey Rey matches after he failed to immediately head to the dressing rooms at the Camp Nou, with the forward watching the final throes of the match from the tunnel instead.

Rules in Spain stipulate that: "Those who are sent off should proceed directly to the dressing rooms, without watching the rest of the match from the stands. Failure to comply with this obligation will be subject to a punishment between one to three matches of suspension and an associated fine."

Suarez will now sit out this year's final, as well as Barcelona's first Copa del Rey game next season, as a result of his actions following his dismissal, despite Barcelona's attempts to appeal against the decision.

The Uruguay international was sent off by referee Jesus Gil Manzano in the last few minutes of the fiery encounter with Atletico after he appeared to elbow Los Rojiblancos midfielder Koke in the face while contesting for the ball.

Luis Suárez has been given a two-match ban. One for his sending off & the second for not going to the changing rooms after the red card.

Having already been handed a yellow card just three minutes earlier for a foul on Juanfran, Suarez was left fuming by the decision to send him for an early bath, and claimed in the aftermath of the game that the "laughable" decision to give him a red card was "what the referee wanted" to do all along.

His dismissal was the first red card that Suarez had received since he moved to Barcelona from Liverpool in July 2014, and was his first for three seasons after a number of disciplinary actions during his time at Anfield.

Paco Alcacer will now be the most likely replacement for Suarez alongside fellow South American superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar when they face unlikely finalists Alaves at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.
